Squirrel-O-Rama Tomorrow Night

Here’s what’s in store. Five people will be making Squirrels and two people will be making Daytons. I’ve also got some Peace Planes (paper planes).

Ottawa Meetup for Wednesdays

Lets have a regular meetup for making simple model planes for fun. Everyone welcome.

General public: We can help them make a simple plane such as Squirrel, Dayton or Sparrow. If you have your own design you can try that.
Model Plane Enthusiasts: They can come and make their own designs or experiment with other designs. I will bring a few supplies.
Aviation Enthusiasts: They can come to extend their knowledge of aeronautics and make a cool model plane.
Observers and Social Types: They can come to see what’s up, meet new people and have interesting conversation.

When/Where (Alert, the schedule is now flexible) Please see events.

Second and fourth Wednesday of the month (starting January 8th, 2013).
Atomic Rooster Pub, 303 Banks Street (Beer burger special too!).

Drop-ins are cool but if we changed location last minute or something it would be nice to have everybody in the know. I’ll try and post changes and anomalies in the comments below.

Made some Dayton planes tonight. I’m very happy with the building and flying experience.

I think I’m ready to make up some instructions and try and get some people to try them. I’m figuring this will catch on. The flight is so slow. My friend Dave W. and I had a name for this type of flying. Chugging.

Dayton and Squirrel-0-Rama

Last night we had a great meetup. We made and flew Squirrels and two Daytons.

People made the Squirrels from memory. Enough people know how to make them so that’s a good sign.

The Dayton went together very well (and fast). Here is my assessment.

The wing had better rigidity than I expected!
I flies well with flaps down. I think I will split the aileron into flaps and aileron so people can learn to experiment with that. I’ve done some test since the meetup and it is a great slow flyer.
We flew it without trimming. It had a phugoid but I will do some more experiments next time.
The paper proves to be light enough.
Wheels add a lot of charisma.
A few of the laser cuts were the wrong dimensions. Still worked well but I will tweak that stuff for the next run.
The assembly and flight are working well enough. After some tweeking to the laser files and the printout, I will attempt a double sided print and do a larger batch for the next revision. In the next build I will make five at once so we can study the flight characteristics further.
