Squirrel-O-Meter! Measurement of Height using Tangent

You can measure height of a model plane indirectly with two observers.

One observer who is measuring an angle and the second observer who is running right under the plane.

The one running under the plane simple stays under the plane until the other observer shouts out the angle of measurement. At that point the runner stops and the distance between the two observers is measured.

You can use the mathematical tangent to calculate the height indirectly.

The Squirrel-O-Meter can be used to measure the angle more accurately than an ordinary protractor. You can print it, cut it out and glue parts together.

You can use your Squirrel-O-Meter to measure other objects such as trees, buildings and perhaps even the height of a cloud!

Makerfaires

Squirrel and the new design projects are going to three Makerfaires in the next short while. I will present the Squirrel to the other makers as well as the general public. If you are in either of these cities it’s a chance to see the Squirrel.

Montreal Makerfaire Aug 25-26 @ 4141 Avenue Pierre-De Coubertin
New York World Makerfaire September 29-30 @ New York Hall of Science
Ottawa Makerfaire, Oct 13-14 @ Shopify, 150 George (last Makerfaire)

The Squirrel project received MakerFaire Editor’s Choice Blue Ribbon in 2011 at the New York World Makerfaire.
