Model Plane Meetups!

Two events! Get your tickets right away as ticket sales close Friday at 4pm. If you don’t have a credit card or paypal, send me a note for your RSVP.

This Sunday at 2pm, make the Sparrow catapult glider!

Sparrow is designed by Lloyd Shales. It’s very easy to make and is an amazing flyer. A catapult glider works like a sling shot so bring your running shoes!

The event will be at Wild Wing which has a large fields next to it. We can make the planes, have a beer or food while the glue is drying and then bring them to the large field.

This Sunday at 7pm, lets make Dayton model planes with wheels!

These sorts of simple model airplanes are fun for all ages but we are doing the event in a pub.

This will be at Busters Pub, 2525 Carling Avenue, Ottawa, Ontario at 7pm. Come early for a brew or food!

The Dayton model airplane is a new design (September 2012)! It’s based on the Squirrel.

Squirrel Cam

One of my projects is to film Squirrel planes from above so you can see the plane and the kids running beneath it.

I was thinking of using a quad copter to carry a camera. But I also tried this experiment of an 18″ Squirrel that can carry a small camera. It works okay but I’ve not produced any good video yet. I’ll have another try!

I’m preparing two boxes. This one is going to a model club in India. It has some of the Lloyd Shales wheels and parts to build 4 Squirrels. Extra propeller as well.

This box is going to Dinkar in India. It has some Lloyd Shales wheels and a couple from my experiments. Also some lubricant for the rubber. I have to add a Sparrow and some business cards. I’ll do that this week just before it is mailed.

Lighter Motor Sticks

I did a few experiments to try and make lighter motor sticks. These have negative attack on the tailplane and a block for the propeller mount.

As you can see I had a bit of trouble with the laser. The wood was pretty light and I had to cut back the laser power.

This should work well with heavier balsa. This is a candidate for the Dayton motor stick.

Sig Cub

I started to make one of these for fun. I’ve made the Sig Cub before around 2004 and they are awesome. It’s very enjoyable but beginners might find it a bit intimidating.

I’m using cardboard as a building board. I didn’t have a big enough piece of cardboard on hand so I will just build one wing at a time. Also nickle plated T-pins. I’m going to do the carving with a box cutter.

Also I am going to make a fleet so I can do a couple of fly-aways.
